5 Holiday Games to Boost Sales and Team Morale

November is all about rolling in all of that festive merchandise and preparing to deliver a fresh platter of holiday cheer to your customers– but then that first week of December hits, the holiday clock is ticking, and your team is losing their holly jolly steam. 

How can you keep them motivated to finish out the year with strong sales numbers and clear the holiday merch from your shelves? 

🎶 (No, the answer is not more Christmas music.) 🎶

You can play some games! 

Gamification as a small business tool is nothing new, but it’s a classic solution you can reinvent when the situation demands it. Playing games is a fun way to encourage your team to stay engaged, connect with your customers, and have a little bit of fun at a time of the year that can otherwise end up feeling stressful. 

Before using games as a business tool, keep these points in mind: 

First, identify your goals.

Perhaps it’s to move out your holiday-specific merchandise. Maybe it’s to ensure that all the new customers coming in are being added to your database. Or getting the team to upsell one more item over $10 for each sale. Whatever it is, make sure you pick a very specific purpose for your game. 

The game should only be played for one to seven days.

Games that stretch longer lose their fizzle, and you certainly don’t want your engagement tool to lose its excitement! Keep it short and sweet.

You can play multiple games throughout the month.

Running shorter games stretched out throughout the month will keep things fresh! Each time you do one, you can set a different goal or purpose to keep things exciting and new.

The Holiday Money Tree 🎄

Tape fake dollar bills on a wall in the shape of a Christmas tree. Encourage your team to ask each customer, “Does your pet have a present under the tree this year?” 

Whether they answer yes or no, if the question leads them to purchase a toy, that team member gets to pull a fake dollar from the tree! At the end of your game, they get to turn their fake dollars into you for actual dollars! 

The Staff Santa Sack

Every time you beat your daily sales goal, each person who worked the floor gets to pull a card from the “Staff Santa Sack”!  The sack can be filled with notecards with a reward, gift or surprise written on it. They can turn their cards into you whenever they want during January and February. The rewards could be things like:

🎁 Skip my turn to clean the bathroom. 

🎁 Go out to lunch with the Boss.

🎁 Pick one item from the store under $20. 

🎁 Get a 30-minute paid break.

Paw-liday Bingo 

Make your bingo board by filling in the boxes with product names, tasks, or questions instead of the typical bingo number. Keep them all the same, or make a variety of boards. Hand them out to your team and have them try to get bingo to move toward your objective. When they have a completed board, they get a prize!

Play Candy Land

Team members must make their way through the game board within a defined time frame, but with a sweet twist… Each space on the board has an action item or sales goal that must be reached first! Sprinkle small prizes throughout the game, and save the grand prize for the end. 

Christmassy Coloring Contest

Use a color-by-number page and make a list of action items to match up to each number. When your team completes the action or sells the item, they can color that section of the page. Whoever fills their page first wins the prize!
