Create Marketing Magic in your Pet Business with Mystery Boxes

Want to know a really pup-ular money-making marketing trend happening in the pet industry right now? (Especially in retail! And manufacturing!) 

Mystery boxes! 

Or mystery bags, surprise baskets, surprise packages… Whatever you want to name it, but the marketing tactic remains the same. 

And while we mentioned this being a popular promotion within retail and manufacturing, there’s NO reason pet industry service providers can’t also get in on the marketing action! As a service provider, you can promote mystery boxes containing gift certificates for your services, as well as start partnerships with other local retail businesses! 

Example→ A trainer could include a session complete with all the tools the pet parent’s dog will need, like clickers, treat pouches, and more.

That’s the gist for why and how to introduce mystery boxes into your pet business, but now let’s look at three more specific fun ideas you could try! 

Mystery Easter Baskets

Since Easter is right around the corner, we thought this would be a great example (and one you could pull together and execute within the next month!) 

Specific holidays might be obvious, but that doesn’t mean they’re not fun. Pet parents will be spoiling their pets for these occasions anyway, and a mystery box (or, in this case, basket) is a fun way to mix it up and try something new for pet presents! 

Rescue Dog Day

Let’s break away from traditional holidays and focus on pet-themed days! National Rescue Dog Day is a great example (and definitely worth celebrating.) 

You can promote a mystery box to celebrate your audience’s rescue pup and the day they got adopted, and life changed forever. Why not throw in some human/dog matching swag? Like a bandana for pup, and a scrunchie for mom! 

Senior Pet Box 

Another way to “niche” your mystery box is to focus on a specific audience. During National Senior Pet Month, highlight your mystery boxes that will pamper and cater to the specific needs of senior pets. 

Demonstrate your knowledge of specific categories of pets, and focus on a new group next time around!
