5 Areas Of Focus For Pet Business Professional Development
Our CEO and founder, Candace D’Agnolo, has started, scaled, and sold three pet businesses since 2004. Throughout every struggle, every step back, and every comeback, she noticed one important fact:
There were little to no options for pet industry-specific professional development. 🤯
When she started Pet Boss Nation, she knew she wanted to offer ongoing, customized community-based support to as many pet professionals as possible– so she organized the Pet Boss Club!
The Pet Boss Club is our monthly membership program that provides pet pros the tools they need to level up their pet business in BIG ways.
But you might be wondering– “What kind of professional development should I be investing in so that I can grow my pet business?”
Here are 5 different areas in your pet business where you can improve and grow (and a FREE training treat at the end!):
1. Marketing.
You have to talk about your business and spread the word. It’s a must in order to grow! Marketing practices are constantly changing and evolving. As a pet business owner, you have to stay up to date with what’s working, what’s not, and what to expect next.
In the Pet Boss Club, we supply monthly marketing kits to our members. They provide marketing ideas, customizable templates, and swipe copy! We also host marketing planning meetings that walk you through how to get 30, 60, or even 90 days ahead on your marketing so that you can focus more on the day-to-day of your business!
2. Selling Skills.
Did you cringe at the word “selling”? It’s okay… you’re not the only one, lots of people do. Maybe you don’t want to come off too “salesy”, or maybe you’re hoping your marketing seals the deal for you, but the reality is… you have to understand how to navigate a conversation to close a sale. Plus, you have to train your staff to do the same! This is true no matter what kind of pet business you run. It doesn’t have to feel salesy or gimmicky. It can feel natural… and over time, can even feel easy!
The trainings in the Pet Boss Club are invaluable to growing your selling skills, plus you get access to Q+A sessions with Candace to ask for further advice! You can also find more tips for how to have sales conversations that convert in episode 19 of the Boss Your Business podcast!
3. Cash flow.
This is a big one because if you can’t properly manage your cash flow as a pet business owner, you could end up in debt, run out of money to spend or run into other big issues.
This topic is so important, that we dedicate a whole section of the Pet Boss Club to finances! Learn how to track your financials, increase your prices for more profit, manage money in and money out, and do everything else you need to know to make sure you’re maximizing your revenue. 💰
If you manage your cash flow the right way, you’ll see big results. Take Carly Patryluk, owner of House of Paws as an example. Carly is a Pet Boss Club member who went from $11,000 a month in revenue to now almost $60,000 a month in just two and a half years after opening her business only a few months before the pandemic. Listen to her story in episode 7 of the Boss Your Business podcast!
4. Operations.
If your operations are a mess, no one in your business is going to work at maximum efficiency– including you! Getting your systems and processes in place will avoid bottlenecks in your business and provide your customers with the most positive experience possible. That’s the kind of service that keeps them coming back!
The Pet Boss Club teaches how to manage teams (including hiring and firing), organize business events, and increase overall productivity by implementing the proper operations that will lift your pet business to new heights!
5. Leadership.
You can hire all you want (or try), but if your leadership is lacking, you’ll create a work environment with higher turnover rates and negative attitudes. Team members need solid leadership to ensure they can do their jobs to the best of their ability, and that they care about the business they work for.
The Pet Boss Club is designed to build strong leaders who cultivate ethical and positive work cultures. Our Club members build strong teams of people who are passionate about their jobs and feel fully supported, and in turn, they do an amazing job! Corey McCusker, the founder and owner of Muttz with Mannerz in Ontario, Canada is a great example of a wonderful leader. She is juggling her team and all the other working parts of her business with incredible grace, and therefore seeing amazing results! Find out more about her leadership style, her hiring process, and more in episode 26 of the Boss Your Business podcast.
